Asheville NC Homecrafts is pleased to honor Shirley Hannah as artist of the month for May!
Shirley is a native of Haywood County and began knitting and crocheting at the age of 8. Even at her young age, Shirley would help her mother knit sweaters. When Shirley was raising her children, she took a break from knitting and crocheting. Now she considers knitting a form of therapy! Shirley has Showgrams Syndrome and says that knitting really helps keep her hands from getting stiff. She says she can lose herself in her knitting and can let the worries of the day go.
Shirley’s hats really stand out from the rest, often adding beads while knitting them. Then when the hats are felted, the beads are fixed in place perfectly, making a beautiful pattern. Shirley also knits scarves, embellishes gloves, and crochets the cutest tape measures.
